AREQUIPA
The region of Arequipa offers a great variety of landscapes, from the beaches and cliffs of the coast, through the desert and its fertile valleys, up to the Altiplano and its active volcanoes, snow-capped mountains and deep canyons. Located at an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level (7500 feet), at the transition between the coastal desert and the highlands, Arequipa is the ideal starting point of several short trips.

The city itself is one of the most beautiful of Peru. Thanks to its wonderful colonial architecture in “Sillar”, a white volcanic stone, it has been classified as Cultural Heritage of Mankind by the UNESCO. For tourists who plan to follow their trip towards higher Andean cities such as Cusco or Puno, Arequipa also presents the great interest of being a natural step to acclimatize to altitude, which allows you to avoid the symptoms of the painful “soroche” (altitude sickness).

The weather in Arequipa is dry and sunny all year long. Day temperature reaches between 20 and 25 ºC (about 70-75 Farenheit). The wet season (December to March) is characterized by the presence of clouds in the afternoon and some scarce precipitations. In winter (June, July), temperatures are somewhat lower and can go down to 5ºC (40 ºF) at night). Withabout 4000 hours per year of sun exposure, Arequipa truly deserves its title of “city of the eternal spring”.

Arequipa is a colonial city, founded by the Spaniards in 1541. It has developed in the colonial times thanks to the trade of the enormous amounts of silver and gold coming from the various mines of the region, in particular that of Potosi (Bolivia), then, during the Republican period, thanks to the trade of the alpaca wool. Today, with nearly one million of inhabitants, Arequipa is the second city of Peru and the economic and intellectual capital of the southern part of the country. The main economical activities are industry, particularly the mining industry, agriculture and, less importantly, tourism.

Although it does not feed any wish of independence, Arequipa is known in Peru as a rebel city. The central power is often strongly contested and the revolts of the “Lion of the South” have several times seriously shaken the Republic of Peru. Arequipa has always had an important political and intellectual role in the country and has produced many artists and intellectuals, such as the famous novelist Mario Vargas Llosa.

People of Arequipa are very proud of their city, and one of their major pride I their gastronomy, reputated to be one of the best of Peru. Amongst the most emblematic or folkloric dishes, let's quote the “rocoto relleno”, sort of hot chili filled with meat, the “cuy chactao”, a guinea pig roasted and cooked under a heavy stone, and the numerous recipes of “camarones”, large and delicious river shrimps that you must absolutely taste before you leave the region.

Tourists generally spend one or two full days to visit Arequipa (Plaza de Armas, Santa Catalina Monastery, Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Cloisters of the Company of Jesus, San Francisco Square, Mummy Juanita Museum, etc.) and the close surroundings (districts of Cayma and Yanahuara, Miradores of Sachaca and Chilina, village of Sabandía and Characato, terraces of Yumina, etc.), as well as two days for a trip to Colca canyon. If you have some extra time available, we advise you to spend one or two days more to discover the coast and its sea-lions, the valley of Majes, the altiplano or, why not, climb up to the crater of an active volcano.

elow, you'll find some ideas for excursions around Arequipa. Some are routinely proposed by local agencies. Others are not and you should organize them in private service. At the Casa de Tintin will give you all the information you need to organize these trips by yourself.

Misti Volcano (foto-izquierda)
Misti is an active volcano with a nearly perfect conic shape, which overlooks Arequipa from its 5825 meters of altitude (19,500 feet). Climbing Misti takes you 2 days and does not present any technical difficulty. At the top, efforts are granted by an exceptional view over Arequipa and the surroundings mountains, as well as into the crater of Misti which presents a permanent fumarolic activity.
Ubinas Volcano (foto-Derecha)
More distant and less known than Misti, Ubinas offers the advantage of an easier and shorter climb (2-3 hours), which allows you to make the excursion in 1 day. The highest point is also lower (5400 m or17,800 ft). It is a spectacular volcano, with a large outer crater in which you can go down to discover the small inner crater, 250 m deep, with a permanent fumarolic activity. The road from Arequipa to the volcano passes by the Laguna Salinas, a large salt lagoon located at an altitude of 4300 m (14,200 ft) where a large number of birds as well as lama and alpaca herds gather.
Huaynaputina Volcano
In the year 1600, Huaynaputina erupted violently, giving rise to the biggest eruption of South America of the last 500 years. Today, the surrounding area is still capped by a thick layer of white pumice that gives a unique aspect to the landscape. A spectacular trek of 3 days allows you to cross the whole Huaynaputina massif from south to north, passing by the crater. The vast uninhabited, moonlike volcanic massif and the final descent into the vertiginous canyon of Rio Tambo will make of this trek an unforgettable experience.

Valley pf Volcanoes of Andagua
150 km northwest of Arequipa is the valley of the volcanoes of Andagua, a wide valley in the Andes where about 20 small volcanoes concentrate. These volcanoes are between 100 and 200 m high and are geologically very young. The last one has appeared only 3 centuries ago. You can trek for 2 days through the unusual landscapes of the volcanoes and their lava flows. It is also possible to go to the valley of the volcanoes from Colca, by a 2-day trek that passes across the canyon.
Chachani
This volcano that looks down upon Arequipa is no longer active, but it offers the great interest of being one of the more-than-6000 m (20,000 ft) peaks easiest to climb in the world. For a relatively low price, a guide can take you to the top in 2 days. The car drives you to an altitude of nearly 5000 m (16,500 ft). There is no ice nor any technical difficulty. Only altitude can be a problem. It is recommended to be somewhat acclimatized before trying this ascent.
The Altiplano

You can rent a car to make a one-day drive on the nearby altiplano. To the East, 2 hours away from Arequipa, is the Laguna Salinas, trapped between Misti, Ubinas and Pichu Pichu volcanoes. It is a National Park where you can observe many bird species as well as thousands of lamas and alpacas in a wonderful landscape.

North of Arequipa, behind Chachani volcano, the highlands are inhabited by a large population of wild vicuñas. From there, you can go back to Arequipa by the old road which passes between Misti and Chachani along the deep canyon of Rio Chili.

THE DESERT ANDTHE COAST

The coast of Peru is occupied by one of the driest deserts in the world, which extends over 4000 kms from northern Peru down to Copiapo in Chile, passing by Atacama. Your stay in Arequipa is a good opportunity to see this fascinating mineral universe.

Walking in the desert
At only a few kilometers away from Arequipa, you can make short walks in the desert (1/2 or 1 day long). Through wide monotonous plains or narrow gorges cut in the rock, you'll enjoy the discovery of a strange and totally different world

Majes Valley
This is an excursion recommendable to people who want to see the coastal desert of Peru from the comfortable seat of a car. After a 2 and a half hour drive through the various landscapes of the desert, you arrive at the edge of a deep and green valley, like an oasis fed with water all year long by the Rio Majes. The colour contrast between the desert and the valley is thrilling. Within the valley, at an altitude of only 500 m (1650 ft), climate is tropical. Here you'll have the opportunity to taste the best “camarones” (crayfish) of Arequipa. You can also visit the archeological site of Toro Muerto, which shows up the highest concentration of pre-Colombian petroglyphs of South America.

The Coast
In a one-day trip, discover the coast: the Matarani islands (similar to Ballestas) with hundreds of sea-lions, Mollendo and Mejía beaches, and the natural protected area of Mejía lagoons, a life refuge between desert and ocean. With more than 250 bird species observed on site and the highest bird population density of Peru, it is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

The country around Arequipa

Although it is close to the desert, the valley of Arequipa is quite fertile. Water is everywhere present thanks to a net of innumerable irrigation channels. The countryside, which is the pride of the people of Arequipa, is also the place where their best culinary traditions are kept. Relax and take the time to stroll around the country by car, bike, horse or just walking.
